All Set For Fun In The Sun
Parents you can try this little experiment with a piece of colored paper:
Step 1: Draw a line in between and label "With Sunscreen" on the right and "Without Sunscreen" on the left.
Step 2: Apply sunscreen to the left and leave the right side empty.
Step 3: Then head out into the sun and hold your paper against it and see what comes through.
This to guide children on the importance of sun protection, that can be fun, fun, and fun.
The Sunshine Sun Science
The sun emits 3 types of ultra violet (UV) radiation. The first 2 types, UVA and UVB, are damaging to delicate skin. Sunscreen works by combining organic and inorganic active ingredients to protect skin from these harmful UV rays emitted by the sun.
Inorganic ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium oxide provide a physical barrier and work by reflecting or scattering ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Organic ingredients like octyl methoxycinnamate (OMC) or oxybenzone work by absorbing UV radiation and dissipating it as heat.
Some organic chemicals don’t break down when exposed to UV light but others do slowly break down over time. That’s one reason why we have to reapply after a long time in the sun.
So when we apply sunscreen to the paper, the chemicals in the sunscreen absorb the UV radiation and prevent them from passing through the paper.
Always choose a non-nano sunscreen, this to prevent nanoparticles from being absorbed into the skin layers :)
